Ghostface proves that he is still an icon after all these years–but does he still have the edge to make us scream, or is it finally ready to lay him to rest? Ghostface first appeared in 1996, starring well-known actors like Matthew Lillard, Skeet Ulrich, and Neve Campbell. This movie instantly became a cult classic, with the crazy plot twists and the unrealistic gory deaths, people loved seeing Ghostface on their screens. The first movie was such a hit that they went on to make 6 more, and people continued to flood the theaters to watch their favorite masked killer.
The movie was released Feb. 27, 2026, with loved characters coming back to the screen like Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox. Fans were worried about where the storyline would go, and lots of fans did not like this installment; however, I think that this movie was fun, and I loved seeing old characters come back. Although it has mixed reviews and some hate it because of the killer(s) that were revealed, it was good.
The film opens by introducing a new scream queen, Tatum Evans. Tatum is the daughter of the original scream queen, Sidney Prescott. Played by Isabel May, best known as Katie from “Alexa and Katie”, May portrays the complex mix of Tatum’s personality, being both shy and confident. The opening sequence of the movie pays tribute to the first “Scream” movie by having Tatum’s boyfriend Ben Brown climb through her bedroom window just like Billy Loomis previously did.
Familiar characters appear in this movie, like Chad, Mindy, Gale, and obviously Sidney. Although some of the characters from “Scream 5″ and “Scream 6,” the leading ladies, Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, did not make a return, showing a fresh start for the franchise.
This movie takes place in Pine Grove, Indiana, rather than Woodsboro like the originals. Sidney is facing repercussions of not preparing Tatum well enough for a possible Ghostface attack, and throughout the movie, we see Tatum live up to her mom’s reputation as the final girl. The “Scream” franchise is typically on the gorier side; this movie was on a different level. The gore was definitely more stomach-turning than the others. I would not recommend seeing this with anyone under the age of 15, as the movie is R-rated.
Overall, this movie was good despite the controversy surrounding it and the reveal of the killer(s). The film felt a little rushed toward the end, and the payoff was not that great, but besides the end, the movie was a solid 7/10, and I would recommend going to see it if you’re a fan of mysteries, franchises, and gory movies.
