37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was killed in her vehicle just a few blocks from her home by an immigration officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota on January 7, 2026 (BBC). Immigration and Customs Enforcement, otherwise known as ICE, shot Good twice when the agents approached her vehicle. The Department of Homeland Security stated the officer acted in self-defense as Good was attempting to run over the agents. However, footage of the incident shows Good steering her vehicle in the opposite direction of all officers and attempting to drive away before being shot. President Trump stated on social media that Good “viciously ran over” an officer (BBC). However, footage reveals that Good’s vehicle never ran over the officer, but rather the officer held onto Good’s vehicle as she attempted to drive away. The officer was taken to a local hospital before being discharged with no injuries.

As a mother of three children, Good had recently moved to Minneapolis from Colorado with her partner to begin a new chapter. The father of her youngest child passed away in 2023, “There’s nobody left in his life,” his grandfather told CNN. Good’s mother stated in an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune, “Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. She was extremely compassionate” (CNN). Her family further described her as a devoted Christian who loved to sing. An alumni of Old Dominion University, Good was an English-lover and writer of poetry.
The officer who fired the two fatal shots at Good was identified as 43-year-old Johnathan Ross, an ICE agent based in El Paso, Texas (Houston Chronicle). Ross recently made headlines in June of 2025 after being injured in an arrest. Ross was dragged by a fleeing vehicle in a Bloomington immigration case, sustaining minor injuries. Ross served in the National Guard for one year before working in border patrol in Texas. From there, he began working for ICE in 2015, where he moved to Minneapolis. No comments from Ross or his family have been released since the incident.
The incident happened less than a mile away from the site of George Floyd’s murder in 2020. Floyd was infamously murdered by a police officer after being accused of trying to purchase items with a counterfeit $20 bill. The officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, suffocating him. This incident played a large role in the Black Lives Matter movement from 2020-2021 (MPR). The site of Good’s murder has been decorated with flowers, candles, and anti-ICE memorabilia.
