Every December, the Cincinnati Zoo hosts a light display across the park. Giant lanterns and figures are set up in a vibrant spectacle of the Christmas spirit. From sunset until closing time, an ever-changing rainbow of lights is sure to warm your heart in this snowy season.
In addition to the beautiful decorations, various attractions are available as part of the celebration. Zoo-Ville, a Christmas village with the Grinch, is open for photos with everyone’s favorite green grouch. Madcap, Cincinnati’s famous puppet show performers, are hosting nightly productions at 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30 pm.
The North Polar Express has an even longer and brighter light tunnel this year, and Swan Lake will display its dynamic light show. Fiona’s fairy statue search in Fiona’s Fairyland offers a fun hunt for kids and adults alike. Meet-A-Creature ambassador animals are located at Manatee Springs, Discovery Forest, and the Club House for zoo goers to meet in person. Holiday treats will be for sale, such as roasted nuts and various stations to roast s’mores.
On Tuesday, Dec 31, the zoo is celebrating the new year with Happy Zoo Year. The 40-foot tall light-up tree will countdown at 8 pm, and carnival-style games will be available for families until closing at 10 pm. Giveaways are also hosted while supplies last.
Because of the popularity, most of the zoo is crowded during the festival. The animals also go into hiding earlier than normal, so if you want to see them, you have to visit early. This doesn’t change the fact that generations of Cincinnatians adore this tradition, and it is a popular tourist destination for out-of-town relatives visiting for Christmas.
If you’re looking for a fun family celebration this holiday season, visit the beloved Cincinnati Zoo for the 43rd annual Festival of Lights! The festivities are wonderful each year, and many families visit annually, including my own. Adults and children alike experience true joy, and you can too.
