Senior Ava Childs is a shining star at Oak Hills High School. Childs balances her roles as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), an honors student, and a varsity lacrosse player. Her story is of hard work, passion, and a deep commitment to helping others.
Childs journey into healthcare began with her cousins, who shared their nursing experiences and sparked her interest. “From a young age, I always knew I wanted to help people, but I wasn’t sure how,” she says. “Watching my cousins made me realize that nursing is my path.” As a CNA, Childs connects with residents personally, providing care that makes a difference in their daily lives. “The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the appreciation from the residents,” she reflects. “Even helping someone put on their shoes can bring a smile to their face, making it all worth it.”
Managing school, work, and lacrosse isn’t easy, but Childs tackles it all with impressive organization. She often has to quickly leave school after fifth period to tackle homework before heading to practice or her shifts. “I try to avoid working and having lacrosse on the same day,” she shares. “If I have to, I coordinate with my manager and coach to make sure I can do both.” This juggling act has taught her the importance of time management, a skill that will serve her well in the future.
Although her role as a CNA has its challenges, Childs knows that passion is essential in healthcare. “You have to love what you do,” she asserts. “If you’re not passionate about helping people, it’s hard to succeed in this field.” Her experiences have solidified her aspirations of attending nursing school, becoming a pediatric travel nurse, and eventually earning her master’s degree. Working with children excites her, as she believes she can truly make a difference in their lives.
On the lacrosse field, Childs plays low attack, thriving on the teamwork and strategy that the game demands. “I love working with my teammates to score goals,” she says. With her final season approaching, she’s determined to hone her skills and surpass her goal count from last year. “The friendships I’ve made and the amazing coaches I’ve had have been the highlights of my lacrosse journey,” she adds, emphasizing how much the sport means to her.
One coach who has had a profound impact on her is Rachel Kyle, who has provided guidance specific to Childs position. “She’s taught me so much about the sport, and her support has been invaluable,” Childs shares, recognizing how Kyle’s mentorship has not only improved her game but also boosted her confidence on and off the field.
As graduation approaches, Childs looks forward to cherishing her last lacrosse season with her friends, eager to create lasting memories together. “I’m excited to enjoy this season and make it special with my amazing teammates,” she says, her excitement palpable.
With her unwavering commitment to healthcare and her love for sports, Childs is more than just a remarkable student at Oak Hills High School; she’s a source of inspiration for her peers. Her dedication to helping others and her passion for lacrosse will undoubtedly pave the way for a bright future, encouraging those around her to pursue their dreams with the same fervor and heart.
