Basketball is more than a sport, it’s a fast paced blend of skill, strategy, and pure competitive fire. From the squeak of sneakers on the hardwood floor to the roar of a crowd, the game creates an atmosphere that pulls players and fans into every moment. It demands excellent team work, discipline, and relentless grit rewarding those who can think quickly and move swiftly. Every possession becomes a test of composure.

The unity and community of basketball has been on full display at Oak Hills High School, where the Highlanders have delivered one of their most memorable seasons in decades. After finishing with an 18-8 overall record and going 10-6 against GMC opponents, Oak Hills surged through the postseason. After beating Lebanon 48-37, the Highlanders faced off against Lakota East in the district finals. Their 42-28 victory allowed them to claim their first district championship since 1996, a milestone celebrated across the Oak Hills community. In the regional semi-finals, they faced the St Xavier Bombers, taking the lead from the very start of the game and winning 49-38. Their playoff run featured gritty wins, a well disciplined defense and a level of chemistry that made them one of the most exciting teams in the region.

At the center of this surge was senior guard AJ Dean, whose leadership and scoring ability shaped the identity of the team. Dean reached the 1000 point milestone, a testament to years of work, consistency, and competitive fire. But his impact went beyond numbers as he set the tone for the Highlanders. He was constantly pushing the pace, defending with high intensity and elevating the players around him. His performance as well as other notable players such as sophomore Cordell Ball, senior Jonovan Herzog, senior Brady Kornmann and others display everything that made this team special. Herzog describes it “The way we play is very different and unique from the past teams that have played here, especially when it comes down to serious situations, largely because of the freedom we were given this year from the coaches.” He also attributed the amazing chemistry of the team to the fact that, “we would all hang out with one another, which united us as a whole.” And that’s what set this group apart, they weren’t just a team, they were a brotherhood.

Even in their tough regional final loss, falling to Princeton 49-22, the Highlanders never lost their identity. They fought through every possession, stayed connected, and played with the same unity that carried them through the season. Their MaxPreps highlights are a perfect demonstration of their craft, which capture it perfectly. After every made shot, you could see the bench erupting, the student section surging to its feet in a wave of noise and excitement, filling the gym with a pulse that seemed to shake the walls, screams of eagerness with every play. And opponents were left in a disarray, trying to calculate their next move against this juggernaut of an Oak Hills team.

This year’s journey also reshaped what Oak Hills basketball means to the community. The students at Oak Hills pack the stands witnessing history, alumni returning to cheer on the next generation, and families filling the gyms with a sense of pride. The team’s success became a shared experience, something bigger than wins and losses. It reminded everyone why high school sports matter. They create moments that bring people together, inspire youth, and leave something long lasting after the final buzzer. For Oak Hills, this season became a story the school will carry forward.
