Highlander Football Prevails! Time to Celebrate or Change?

The Scots’ football season opener at Edgewood resulted in a win, but most think it wasn’t pretty. The Scots have had a decent amount of hype surrounding this season, with three transfers from Taylor, including Anquan Evans, Mike Branch, and Aaron McFarland. The game started strong with an outstanding kickoff return from senior Linebacker Max Rhodes, which started the drive within 20 yards of the endzone. The drive didn’t end with a score, although the Scots had an amazing field position; they ultimately missed the first field goal of the season after going three downs without converting. The Edgewood Cougars then took control and dominated the first half until the end. Scoring two field goals, a fumble return for a touchdown, and a 32-yard reception for a touchdown, that would be the Cougars’ last score of the game.

With 2:59 left in the half, junior Quarterback Lincoln Schreiber threw a dart downfield to sophomore Cordell Ball for an 80-yard touchdown. Then, immediately on the kickoff, senior J’Sean Dorsey recovered the live ball inside the Cougar 15-yard line. So the Highlanders score back-to-back after junior Running Back Emmett Johnson makes a 14-yard reception for a touchdown, going into the second half 20-14. After Schreiber runs three yards for a touchdown with 10 minutes left in the game, Edgewood does not answer, and the game ends 21-20. Schreiber had an outstanding game with 21/33, 254 passing yards, and three touchdowns. Another achievement in this game is a broken school tackle record by Max Rhodes (323 career tackles).

Although the comeback win and the achievements in this game are worth noting, most believe this game shouldn’t have been this close. Edgewood is a Division II school that isn’t in the GMC. The team is going to face way harder challenges, for example, next week against Lakota East. Senior Defensive Lineman Mike Branch had this to say about the performance on Friday: “I do not think the Edgewood game should have been as close as it was, although I feel that we came out a little damp and made changes that were crucial and good to adjust to throughout the game.” Most players and students believe that the highlanders definitely could have done better than they did. So two questions will be answered this Friday: Was the Edgewood performance a rust game? Also, can the Scots turn it around against the Thunderhawks?
