From teaching 6th graders in the morning to coaching tennis in the afternoon, Jeremy Miller is beloved by his students and players. Miller has been passionate about tennis since he was a young kid. He eventually started playing tennis at Sycamore High School in Greater Cincinnati.
While playing tennis at Sycamore he met coach Micheal Teets who would inspire him to become a tennis coach later in life. Throughout his time with Coach Teets, Miller learned plenty of life lessons, developing a good work ethic, building strong relationships with coaches, and teammates, and maturing on and off the court.
In due course, he graduated from Sycamore in 2005 and attended Ohio State University. While there, he worked to achieve his degree in social studies, a subject close to his heart. It originated from his grandpa, Al Miller, a Holocaust survivor who had a remarkable journey and story.
While attending Ohio State, he became a teacher’s assistant in the New Albany school district, where he found his first coaching job as a JV Tennis Coach. After graduating from Ohio State, he began working at a charter school in Columbus.
Soon after he found a teaching position at Delshire Elementary in Cincinnati Ohio, he became the Oak Hills High School girls’ tennis head coach. After five years at Delshire, he eventually moved to the local middle school, Delhi Middle. He quickly became popular and was known as one of Oak Hills’ better coaches. He taught his players how to build connections, be confident, and gave them more life lessons than can be taught in a classroom. When I asked Miller why he wanted to become a coach he said “I love watching my players learn and grow and helping them whenever they need it” He insinuated that the reasons that he became a coach are also why he became a teacher.
In 2019 he welcomed his first son Henry, who had a tremendous impact on his life. Miller continued to coach after his son’s birth and during his next season of coaching he won GMC Coach of the Year and led his team to finish third in the GMC tournament which was the highest finish in program history. As a few years passed he welcomed his second son Archie, who had another tremendous effect on him and helped him grow as a person and a parent. Soon after his second son’s birth, he decided to stop coaching tennis and focus on raising and spending time with his kids.
After Miller left the tennis program, his presence was greatly missed in the coming seasons. Seeing this, he decided to come back to the Oak Hills Tennis program starting this upcoming 2025-26 season. This sparked news and excitement around the district because he was a well-known coach and led them to many wins. When asking Miller why he decided to come back to coaching he told me “I miss it a lot actually, I had to stop because of my sons but now I’m coming back to coach, and this year’s group is very talented and I’m excited to coach them this year and hope to put some wins and build more team chemistry.”
He also mentioned that academics are essential, but sports help build work ethic and accountability and teach more life lessons than a classroom does. And he hopes to instill those things into his players in the future. Current and Future tennis players are very excited to welcome Miller back to the program and can’t wait to see what the future holds!
