As the school year begins again, students will become increasingly stressed and anxious about their futures and the remainder of the school year. Coping with this stress can be challenging for everyone, as students may encounter various scenarios throughout the year. Coming up with ways to help stay on top of your work and get back into school rhythm is important for all students, but it can be challenging.
At Oak Hills High School, our staff does an amazing job of making resources available to all students at many different times. Some of the programs that are highly recommended for students to use are the tutoring services here in the school. For example, Mrs. Tuchfarber and Mrs. Liedhegner host the writing center. This service is made up of students from the high school student body who have been recommended for their writing and leadership skills by past English teachers. Students can use these services to get help on anything from grammar for a short paragraph to something as life-changing as a college essay. The students that you can meet with in the writing center are kind and helpful, so being able to easily access their services is a great way to reach out at school. Another service that is similar to the writing center is the math center set up by Mr. Yates; these services are available during the day and in X-bell. Students are always going to be helped by someone who has taken the class or knows the material. Reaching out for help from peers is definitely hard, but as the school year gets going, it will be easier to stay on track with all of the accessible help that is provided by the school.
Another resource available for students at the high school are the school psychologists and therapists. At the high school, there are four different psychologists available for students to talk to and reach out to during the day. These individuals are Ms. Kristin Capitena for students with last names A-G, Mrs. Amy Asper for students Gu-Pa, Mr. DJ Young for students Pe-Z, and Mrs. Mary Knuth for all students. As mentioned on the Oak Hills Portal website, the counseling center’s mission is to “advocate for the unique needs of each student with the support of a dedicated team.” Not only are there services provided through the school, but outside resources are also recommended for students if they need to reach out or get help. On the link provided, there are over 125 outside resources that students can contact for any need they have during the school year or summer. But always remember that 911 (emergency) and 988 (suicide hotline) are available at all times.
Oak Hills is an exceptional school with amazing students and resources. Being able to have a comfortable place to reach out for help and know that people care is an important part of a good school, and Oak Hills is the perfect place for that.
