Last Thursday, Oak Hills Men’s Varsity Soccer triumphed over the LaSalle Lancers in an away game to claim their first win of the season, putting their season record to 1-2.
Going into the game, the Lancers were 1-1 on the season, winning against Colerain just two days prior. The Highlanders were coming into the game winless, with an 0-2 start on the season. Sr. Logan Lauman was quoted saying “We wanna make a difference” when talking about the slow start to the season, and a turnaround was right around the corner.
The game started off in the Highlanders favor, when #10 Midfielder Bailey Sims-Sharpe scored off a penalty kick with 2:30 left in the first half, putting them up 1-0. The Lancers came out hot in the second half, scoring off of a penalty kick six minutes in, tying the game 1-1. The score wouldn’t remain tied for long, with #11 Midfielder Ethan Hobbs scoring with 24:25 left in the second half, breaking the tie and putting the Highlanders up 2-1, securing the first win of the season for the Highlanders.
Other notable stats on the game include Oak Hills nine shots on goal, four saves, one penalty kick and 16 free kicks. They also won the possession battle, controlling the ball for 51.7% of the game. The Lancers had 13 shots at goal, three saves, 12 free kicks and one penalty kick. Coach Zach Moeller, former Oak Hills soccer star, also got to celebrate his first career win as coach. He later described the game as very “gritty” with four yellow cards being drawn, 3 of those on Oak Hills.
The Highlanders next game was played on Tuesday, August 26th at Sycamore High School. The Aviators defeated the Highlanders, putting the team at a record of 1-3. Next week, the Highlanders will face off against the Wildcats at Harrison High School.
